WHAT IS THE BEST GNAT TRAP?
Well, that is not a very easy question. There are people that build them from ordinary household material, whilst others prefer to buy ready to go products. In this article we will take a closer look at both possibilities. Hopefully after that you will be able to decide which method suits you best. For those who do not feel like reading this whole post let us start with a quick summary. Making your own gnat trap is obviously free. It is a good way to get rid of those little flies that try to take over your kitchen. However not everyone has good results by applying this method. Only if you do it properly you have a good chance of getting rid of them. Still, a small amount will not fall for you trap so if you have a serious problem then this might not work for you. Only a couple of gnats are necessary to repopulate and you are back to zero. On the other hand, if you are willing to spend just a little money you are guaranteed of succes. For only a couple of bucks you can buy a serious product that will work for months. Gnats can come back so easily which absolutely makes it worth to consider a simple but effective gnat trap.
SO HOW DO I BUILD ONE MYSELF?
There are a few ways to do so. However we will go into more detail about the two most common ways. First of all you could search for an empty jar. Maybe you have an empty jam jar that you would throw away anyways. Fill your jar with vinegar until it is about half full. You can use any vinegar by the way. Seal the jar with a small piece of a plastic bag and make some small holes in the top. You can use a small screwdriver to do this. Simply place your trap close to where the gnats seem to stay and the magic will happen sooner or later.
The second way is to use red wine. For this trick you also need some kind of jar or glass. Fill half of your jar with red wine first. After that add a couple of drops of soap. Soap you use for washing your dishes works extremely well. After you added a couple of drops make sure you mix it up with the red wine. You can use a spoon for that. Because the soap will change the surface strength of the wine, the gnats will be sucked straight into it. Position it close to them and you will be surprised how well it works.
SO WHY WOULD I CONSIDER TO BUY A GNAT TRAP IF I CAN MAKE ONE MYSELF?
Now this is where our own experience comes into place. The problem with gnats is that they seem to come back over and over again. Especially if you have some plants in your house. Some soils even seem to make this problem bigger. After we had a serious gnat problem we tested the two ‘free’ ways above and we got some great results. The vinegar trick seemed to do slightly better than the one with the red wine. But after we emptied the jars it only took a day or two until we noticed the problem came back. We started to do some research and found out that there are products that work on the long term. We didn’t feel like placing a jar in our kitchen every day. And besides that it didn’t look so pretty. We ordered two products to test. The first one is the so called apple trap. It’s a plastic apple that you can place in your kitchen and attracts the gnats. They can and will enter it, but they won’t be able to fly out. The lure to put into the apple comes with it. This is a great product if you have your problem in your kitchen. But like we said, some people experience their flies around plants. If that is the case you should go for a sticky trap. They often come in a set of multiple sticks and you simply place them in the soil of your plant. These work really well too.
WHERE CAN I BUY ONE?
Maybe your local supermarket provides them, but in many cases they do not. Or the ones they offer are of low quality. We ordered ours from Amazon and you will be shown them by clicking the images above. They offers way more similar products and these will be displayed to you as well. If you are not certain about our choice then you can check them out too. Customer reviews are also a good way to find out what is going on. Anyways, we really hope you will get some great results with your gnat trap and live a bug free life!
