This compact bug zapper is one of many built by the brand Stinger. The company has quite a large collection of insect killer products that cover different area sizes. It’s a good and well-known brand that you will come across several times when searching for the right bug zapper. We do however advise you to read through some of the reviews before purchasing any of their products as some of them seem to work very well whilst others have lead to disappointed customers. Together with the Stinger BKC90 we do believe that they have a few very good products!
The TZ15 model definitely is one of their best products. Maybe it’s not as ‘pretty’ as the lantern-shaped bug zapper that other brands like to use, however it gets the job done very effectively. A 15 Watts UV light bulb attracts all kinds of flying pests like mosquitoes, biting flies, yellow jackets, moths and many more. 15 Watts is about the minimum power that we advise you to get and should really be enough to clear areas up to 1/2 acre. There’s no use to buy a stronger product if your bug problem is limited to your porch or just part of your garden. Besides that, 15 Watts is not a huge power draw. Make sure to place it about 25 feet away from human activity and do not attach it to your house.
One big advantage of this great zapper is that it’s quiet. Off course you will hear some zapping like you will with any other bug zapper, but the noise that comes from the TZ15 is remarkably low. The charged grid will instantly kill bugs as soon as there is contact. The outer structure prevents bigger insects from entering as they will not be killed on contact. This makes sure you won’t have them trapped inside leading to multiple zapping noises and also makes cleaning easier. The instructions say that you can leave it switched on non-stop, however we recommend to only use it when needed. In that case the light bulb will live longer and daily cleaning won’t be necessary. Still try to clean it once a week.
Another advantage is that it’s made out of plastic. It’s is weatherproof so you can leave it outside as long as you want. Just take it inside when the mosquito-season is over so it will stay as clean as possible and you won’t have to worry about any damage in case of extreme weather conditions. Like we mentioned before it has an outer structure which also prevents children and pets from contacting the charged grid. In case you are still worried then just attach it somewhere they can’t reach. A pole or hook could help out (click here for our poles and hooks page).
Optional Mosquito Octenol Lure
In case you consider to buy the TZ15 bug zapper to mainly kill mosquitoes and biting flies then you could add the Mosquito Octenol Lure. It promises to increase the amount of these insects heading towards the lamp. We experienced that this amount however wasn’t as high as we had hoped. There was just a slight increase in dead mosquitoes so it’s worth to try this product without the lure and see from there. A good reason to add it would be in areas where mosquitoes are high in numbers and you would still experience a few mosquitoes despite the zapper. Considering that you pay $6.97 for the lure and that you need to replace it every 30 days we are a bit skeptical about it.
The downside is the price. Compared to similar products (like the Flowtron BK-15D) you pay quite a lot for this device. Reasons to buy this one however would be the smaller size and lower zapping noises.
